Found Sound China is a music diplomacy fellowship by Found Sound Nation that brings together eight music producers -- 4 from the U.S. and 4 from China -- for a month of sound collection and collaborative music production. As commercial hip hop and electronic music are currently experiencing unprecedented popularity in China, Found Sound China seeks to promote a DIY music production aesthetic inspired by creative traditions ranging from hip hop to experimental sound art.

✨It starts on July 1, 2018 with a week-long period of workshopping and orientation at Lijiang Studio (a stunning rural site in Yunnan Province), during which producers will exchange techniques in sound collection, mobile recording, and digital music production. After this initial residency, Chinese and American producers will travel in pairs for two weeks through separate regions of China, traversing both rural and urban settings. Each pair will use mobile recording rigs to record whatever sounds they find most compelling: traditional instruments, nature sounds, car horns, folk operas, prayer bells, freestyles in the local dialect, and more. These intrepid producers then reconvene in Beijing for five days, where they will mix, exchange, remix, and master their tracks, give a series of performances, and compile the music into an album to be released through partner outlets in both China and the U.S. âœ¨

💫All travel/accommodation costs will be covered, and participants will receive a stipend of $500

Applications are due on February 28, 2018, and applicants will be notified of our decision by March 31, 2018. The program is eligible to citizens of the U.S. and the P.R.C.
